Day by day on the listed Sea Familia 1 route

Day one begins with pickup in Labuan Bajo, boarding and lunch on board. First stop is Kelor, an islet about an hour out, where a short, steep climb of 15 to 30 minutes rewards you with a view over the bay. After a snorkel at Manjarite you reach Kalong for sunset, watched from the boat. Dinner is on board.

Day two is the big one. It opens with the ridge walk on Padar, with breakfast back on board afterwards. Then it's a swim and snorkel at Pink Beach, lunch on board, and the Komodo walk with a ranger. The afternoon brings a drift snorkel at Manta Point, free time at Sebayur and dinner on board.

Day three is gentler: an early swim and snorkel over shallow coral at Kanawa, then breakfast on board on the way back to Labuan Bajo, at a time confirmed in writing.

Stops and their order can change with traffic, weather and tides; the captain decides on the day. Where the boat spends the night depends on the weather and the captain's decision that day.

Times are operating patterns, not a timetable. Pickup is the only promise we make by the clock.

The big day: walks first, water after

Walk before the heat sets in. Sunrise at Padar is 06:18 in July and 05:31 in November. If you want to see it, you'll leave the boat about 65 minutes before, and the climb to the main viewpoint takes 25 to 45 minutes. Wear proper shoes: parts of the path are loose and steep.

Pink Beach is 1 to 8 m deep with a mild current, and you'll have 45 to 90 minutes there. On Komodo a ranger walks with every group for 45 to 120 minutes. Bring closed shoes and a hat, as the trails have little shade.

Manta Point comes in the afternoon: a 30 to 60 minute drift over 3 to 15 m of water, in a strong current. Mantas, turtles and dolphins are often seen in season, never promised.

Skipper's tip pack the day bag the night before, with water, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and your park ticket on top. Nobody wants to hunt for a mask at 5 in the morning.

What to have ready each day

Pack for the day ahead, not for the whole trip.

  • Day one: closed shoes for the Kelor climb, a mask and snorkel, water and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Day two: trekking shoes for Padar and Komodo, a light layer for the early start, your park ticket and your passport or ID.
  • Day three: a mask and snorkel for Kanawa, and your bags packed the night before.

Sea Familia 1 provides a mask and snorkel. For Sea Familia 2 the snorkel gear is confirmed in your written quote, so ask before you decide what to carry. On either boat, a child who has tried a mask on the day before you sail is calmer at the first stop. A go in the hotel pool counts.

FAQ

Do we have to climb Padar?

No. Padar is a 25 to 45 minute climb on a loose, steep path, and it's entirely optional. The boat can spend that morning at Pink Beach instead. Tell the crew on day one and the captain will adjust the order of the stops.

Is Manta Point on the same day as the Komodo walk?

On the listed Sea Familia 1 route, yes. Day two holds Padar, Pink Beach, the Komodo walk and Manta Point. If that is too much for children or grandparents, ask us to move one stop; the captain decides on the day.

How many hours are we in the water each day?

Each snorkel stop lasts 30 to 90 minutes: 45 to 90 at Pink Beach and Kanawa, 30 to 60 at Manta Point. With one to three stops a day, that's anything from 30 minutes to a few hours, and you can climb out whenever you like.

Who decides the order of the stops?

The captain, on the day, from traffic, weather and tides. Tell us your priority in the first message, and we plan around it where the tides allow.
