How hard Padar is for a child

Updated 28 October 2026

The Padar climb takes 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint and is moderate. Leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise, which is 06:18 in July and 05:31 in November. The climb is optional on every trip, and PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia books your boat.

How long, how steep: the Padar numbers

Allow 25 to 45 minutes to reach the main viewpoint. The upper ridge takes longer, and stopping at the main viewpoint is a full visit. The difficulty is moderate: parts of the path are loose and steep, and sturdy shoes matter more than fitness.

Carrying a toddler up a loose, steep path is the part to plan for. Padar is a viewpoint, not a beach stop. There are no dragons on Padar; the dragons are on Komodo.

Kelor is the shorter hill. Komodo is the ranger walk. Padar asks for more than either, and the listed Sea Familia 1 route puts it early on day 2 for that reason.

Before sunrise: what time the day starts

Guests leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise, in the dark. Sunrise at Padar is 06:18 in July and 05:31 in November, and through the year it runs from 05:31 to 06:18. Count back 65 minutes for your own date.

That means an early night before. Breakfast on Sea Familia 1 follows the climb, according to the listed route. The captain decides the timing on the day, from the weather and the light.

A daily visitor cap in time sessions applies at Padar, Rinca and Komodo. Your boat company registers the party and checks the current cap, so tell us your dates early.

At the top, and the walk down

The classic viewpoint looks over three bays with differently coloured sand. The sun is low at the start of the day, and the light on the bays is soft. Padar is busiest in July, August and December, so the start of the day matters.

The walk down is quicker than the climb and harder on knees. Take it in short steps on the loose sections. Hold a child's hand where the path narrows, and let the slowest walker set the pace for the whole party.

Skipper's tip Bring a headtorch for the start, because the party leaves the boat in the dark. Keep one hand free for the path, and carry water in a small bag.

If the climb is not for you

It is optional. On a private charter the boat is yours, so the party splits without a fuss: some climb, some stay aboard and sleep in, and everyone meets at breakfast once the climbers are back. Grandparents, toddlers and a tired parent all have good reasons to skip it, and none needs to explain.

Padar is one stop of several, and a day still has its shape without it. The Komodo walk and Pink Beach are the other two stops that fill the morning. Tell us before the trip if the party wants Padar left out, and the plan is written that way.

FAQ

How long does the Padar climb take?

Allow about 25 to 45 minutes to reach the main viewpoint; the upper ridge takes longer. The path is moderate, with loose and steep sections. Guests leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise, so the whole outing is longer than the climb, and sturdy shoes matter.

Is Padar open every day?

Not always. The harbour master's office and the park office decide, and Padar and Komodo have closed for a few days in recent seasons for waves, wind and park reasons. A daily visitor cap in time sessions also applies. Check the notices before you fly, and ask us about your dates.

Do we have to go at sunrise?

No rule says so. Sunrise is the best window, and the listed Sea Familia 1 route puts Padar early on day 2. The captain decides the timing on the day, and on Sea Familia 2 the stops are agreed with you in writing.

Can grandparents stay at the bottom?

Yes. Padar is optional, and the boat is yours on a private charter. Grandparents can stay aboard and sleep in while the others climb, then hear about it over breakfast, which follows the climb. The Komodo walk is the other land stop to plan around.
