Kalong at dusk, from the deck
Updated 28 October 2026
The bats leave Kalong about 15 minutes after sunset, in a stream that lasts roughly 30 minutes, and you watch from the boat. Sunset is 17:57 in July and 18:01 in November. It is a viewing stop, not a landing, and PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia books your boat.
What time to be on deck
The bats leave Kalong about 15 minutes after sunset, so be on deck before it. Sunset at Kalong is 17:57 in July and 18:01 in November, and through the year it runs from 17:49 to 18:27. Add 15 minutes for the first wings.
The flight lasts roughly 30 minutes. Arrive early, settle with a drink in your hand and have the camera charged. The listed Sea Familia 1 route puts Kalong at the end of day 1, so the whole party is already aboard and tired from the first hill.
Kalong is a mangrove island that lies between Komodo and Rinca. Nobody lands; the show is watched from the boat.

What you see and hear
Thousands of flying foxes roost in the mangroves. At dusk they leave in a long stream, and the stream thins and stops over about 30 minutes. The sky fills slowly and then empties. Some evenings the stream is dense, some evenings thinner, and only the evening itself tells you which.
You hear wings before you see them. A long lens helps if you want a photo, and a charged camera helps more. Bats are wildlife too, and the show depends on the evening.
Kalong is the one stop on the route that asks for no swimming and no walking.

Dusk with a small child on deck
Children who tire at dusk can watch from a lap, wrapped in a light layer. Bring a light layer for everyone, and mosquito protection as for any evening outdoors in Indonesia. Evenings on deck are long for a small child, so bring a quiet toy and a snack. Hunger spoils more sunsets than clouds do.
Keep a hand on any child near the rail. The captain decides where the boat sits, and the stop is watched from wherever that is.
Skipper's tip Charge the camera and phone before the stop, not after it, and put a small torch in the day bag for the walk to the cabin afterwards.
After the flight, the table
Dinner is in the fare on both boats, and the evening runs from the flight to the table. Tell us about any food needs when you book, and the answer comes in writing.
The first night aboard ends the day, with air conditioning and a private bathroom in every cabin. The sleeping aboard at anchor guide covers the cabin at night.
Plan the evening with the slowest eater, not the keenest photographer. Leave an hour of slack after the flight, because nobody hurries a dinner that follows a show like that.
FAQ
Can we get off the boat?
No. Kalong is not a landing stop, and the bat flight is watched from the boat. The captain anchors at a distance that gives a good view, and the whole party stays aboard. There is nothing to climb, nothing to walk and no ticket to buy for the stop.
How long does the flight last?
Roughly 30 minutes. The bats leave the mangroves about 15 minutes after sunset in a long stream, so arrive on deck before sunset and allow about three-quarters of an hour in all. Camera batteries, phones and small torches are worth charging beforehand.
What if it rains?
The captain decides. Rain changes visibility and the sea state, and the stop order can change with traffic, weather and tides. A flight in rain can be shorter or harder to see. On Sea Familia 1 the upper-deck saloon is a dry place to wait.
Is every evening the same?
No. The flight changes with the evening, the light and the weather. Sunset moves through the year, and the bats leave about 15 minutes after it. The stream lasts about 30 minutes, but a good view is never guaranteed.
