The honest list of what is hard

Start with boarding. Both boats carry two tenders, with 40 hp engines on Sea Familia 1 and 100 hp engines on Sea Familia 2. Ask us in writing before you book about the steps, ramps and handrails at boarding, and about what help the crew gives.

The paths come next. Kelor is a steep hill of 15 to 30 minutes. Padar takes 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint, and parts of the path are loose and steep. The Komodo walk runs 45 to 120 minutes with a ranger, and shorter trails exist.

The boats carry basic first aid, and no medical facilities are listed. Fitness and health are the guest's decision and the doctor's. Travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended and sits in the excluded list.

Who sleeps where: main-deck cabins first

For a party of six, two grandparents, two parents and two children, Sea Familia 1 works with its Manta cabins on the main deck. The grandparents take Manta II, the parents Manta III, and the two children share Manta Cabin I, which has a queen-size bed and an extra bed. Manta IV stays empty. The Turtle cabins are on the upper deck, which is a floor up.

On Sea Familia 2 the grandparents take one of the two Master cabins on the main deck, with a double bed and a balcony. The parents and children take the Family cabin on the lower deck, a queen bed plus a bunk for up to 4.

Cabin choice here is about stairs and floors, not about the motion of the boat.

Three slow days (sample)

This sample is built from park timings and the listed Sea Familia 1 route. It is a plan, not a promise.

Day 1. Skip the Kelor hill if the climb is too much and take the snorkel at Manjarite, or none at all. At dusk the bats leave Kalong, and the whole party watches from the deck.

Day 2. Skip Padar. The Komodo walk at the ranger's pace is the one land stop that matters, and Pink Beach comes before it with sand to sit on for anyone who would rather stay dry.

Day 3. Kanawa is shallow and easy, then back to Labuan Bajo. Sea Familia 2 stops are agreed with you in writing before you pay.

Skipper's tip Say at the start of the Komodo walk that the party wants a shorter trail. The ranger offers shorter and longer trails, and most day trips take a shorter one.

FAQ

Can grandparents skip the Padar climb?

Yes. Padar is optional, and a party of six on a private charter can split: some climb for 25 to 45 minutes and some stay on the boat. The climb starts about 65 minutes before sunrise, so a slow morning aboard is the easy alternative.

Which cabin deck for a grandparent?

The main deck. On Sea Familia 1 that means Manta Cabins I to IV, and on Sea Familia 2 the two Master cabins. Turtle cabins are on the upper deck of Sea Familia 1, and the Deluxe and Family cabins are on the lower deck of Sea Familia 2. Ask us for a cabin plan in writing.

Is the Komodo walk long?

It runs from 45 to 120 minutes, with a ranger leading, and the ranger offers shorter and longer trails. Most day trips take a shorter one. The walk starts at Loh Liang, and nobody walks the park without a ranger. Tell the ranger at the start that your party wants a shorter trail, and the pace follows the slowest walker.

Do we need travel insurance?

It is strongly recommended and it is not in the fare: insurance sits in the excluded list. Choose a policy with medical cover and emergency evacuation. Health decisions about the walks are the guest's and the doctor's, and the boats list basic first aid only.
