Three days on a Komodo boat with two children: a plan, and what to cut
Updated 28 October 2026
A family of four can do the listed Sea Familia 1 route in 3 days and 2 nights, and still cut Padar for small children and Manta Point for non-swimmers. A private charter for four costs IDR 27,250,000 (≈ USD 1,672) per person on Sea Familia 1. Guide and park tickets are extra.
A plan, not a trip report
Here's a plan for a family of four, built on the Sea Familia 1 route with the park's distances and trek times.
We've assumed two adults and two children who can manage a steep path and wear a mask. If yours are younger, the list of what to cut, further down, is for you. Children under 3 travel free with a parent or guardian; from 3 the full fare applies.
Who sleeps where. A family of four takes two of the six cabins on Sea Familia 1. Each cabin has a queen-size bed, a private bathroom and air conditioning. Manta Cabins I to IV are on the main deck and Turtle Cabins I and II on the upper deck. The obvious split is parents in one, children in the other. Which two cabins you get, and whether they sit next to each other, is confirmed in writing before you pay.
Sea Familia 1 has 6 cabins and takes up to 12 guests, so the four of you fill a third of it.
Day 1: Kelor, a first snorkel and the bats at Kalong
The boat leaves Labuan Bajo and reaches Kelor in 50 to 70 minutes. Kelor is a small hilly islet with a short, steep climb of 15 to 30 minutes to a viewpoint over the bay. The path is dry and loose, so closed shoes are the most important thing you pack.
Then Manjarite, the first snorkel of the trip. Think of it as a practice swim. Mask on, face in the water, a minute at a time, with an adult beside each child. If a child wants out after ten minutes, count that as a success.
The day ends at Kalong, a mangrove islet between Komodo and Rinca. Thousands of flying foxes roost there and pour out in a long stream at dusk, for about 30 minutes. You watch from the boat and do not land. Sunset falls between 17:49 and 18:27 across the year, and 18:01 in November, so the bats are an evening activity and not a bedtime problem.
Where the boat spends the night depends on the weather and the captain's decision that day. The listed route doesn't name the anchorage, and we won't guess.
Day 2: Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo and Manta Point
This is the long day, and the one to trim if you need to. Padar is a sunrise climb. Guests leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise, which is 05:31 in November and 06:18 in July, and the climb to the main viewpoint takes 25 to 45 minutes. Parts of the path are steep and loose. With a child under five, we'd skip Padar and sleep in.
Pink Beach makes a better first proper snorkel. The reef sits close to the shore, the water is 1 to 8 m deep, and the current is mild. Mornings are calmer. Plan 45 to 90 minutes. Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat go in the day bag, and nobody stands on coral.
On Komodo Island a ranger leads the trek, on trails from short to long, lasting 45 to 120 minutes. The dragons are wild and often seen, never guaranteed. Wear closed shoes and cover up, because there is little shade.
Manta Point is the stop for confident swimmers. The water is 3 to 15 m deep, the current is strong and the snorkel is guided, 30 to 60 minutes, drifting along the reef. The advice is a life jacket, or a confident swimmer in the group. Life jackets are carried on board; ask for the sizes you need in your quote. Mantas are often seen here, and the season runs roughly December to February and July to September, but they are never promised. The captain decides on the day when the boat reaches Manta Point. The listed day then ends at Sebayur.
Day 3: Kanawa and home, and what to cut
Day 3 is the easy one. The listed route ends with a snorkel at Kanawa, a small island west of Rinca with white sand and shallow coral reefs, 1 to 6 m deep. It's a gentle second chance for a child who found Manta Point too much. The boat then returns to Labuan Bajo. Breakfast is on board.
Stops and their order can change with traffic, weather and tides; the captain decides on the day. What's above is a shape, not a timetable. Plan the shape and leave the clock to the captain.
Here's what to cut, in the order we'd cut it.
- Padar, for children under five. The climb is the hardest part of the trip.
- Manta Point, for a child who is not a confident swimmer. The rest of the family can still go in.
- The long Komodo trail. A short one still shows you the island.
Keep everything else. The snorkels at Manjarite, Pink Beach and Kanawa are what children remember. Sea Familia 1 provides a mask and snorkel for each guest; fins are not provided. Snorkel gear for Sea Familia 2 is confirmed in your written quote.
What it costs for four
For 3 days and 2 nights at 2026 rates, a private charter for four on Sea Familia 1 costs IDR 109,000,000 (≈ USD 6,687) for the whole boat. That is IDR 27,250,000 (≈ USD 1,672) per person. On Sea Familia 2 the same four pay IDR 126,500,000 (≈ USD 7,761), or IDR 31,620,000 (≈ USD 1,940) per person. One to eight guests share one band on Sea Familia 1, and one to ten on Sea Familia 2.
If you don't mind sharing, an open-trip seat is the cheaper way in. Fares are per person, with guide and documentation included. On Sea Familia 1 a Turtle cabin is IDR 6,750,000 (≈ USD 414) and a Manta cabin is IDR 7,750,000 (≈ USD 475). Its open trips start on Mondays and Fridays.
On a private charter the guide and the photo and video documentation are not included; both are available on request and quoted separately. Komodo National Park tickets and ranger fees are never part of the fare. A fuel surcharge applies while marine fuel prices are high; it is paid separately and the current amount is confirmed in your written quote. Prices exclude 1.1% tax.
Skipper's tip Let each child wear the mask on deck for a few minutes the evening before the first snorkel. Their first minute in the water shouldn't also be their first minute in a mask.
Send us the children's ages, your dates and how many of you can swim, and we'll reply with a cabin plan and a written quote.

FAQ
Is Sea Familia 1 or Sea Familia 2 better for two children?
Both have 6 cabins with private bathrooms and air conditioning. For a family of four the Sea Familia 1 whole-boat rate is the lower one, IDR 27,250,000 (≈ USD 1,672) against IDR 31,620,000 (≈ USD 1,940) per person. Sea Familia 2 is the longer boat and takes up to 14 guests.
Can small children skip Padar and Manta Point?
Yes. Stops and their order are decided by the captain on the day, and nobody is required to climb or swim. Padar is a steep sunrise climb of 25 to 45 minutes, and Manta Point has a strong current. The rest of the family can still go.
Are the dragons and mantas guaranteed?
No. Dragons on Komodo Island are wild and often seen on a ranger-led trek, never guaranteed. Mantas are often seen in season, roughly December to February and July to September, and never promised. Sightings depend on tide and current, so the order of the stops can change on the day.
Do children pay full fare?
Children under 3 travel free with a parent or guardian, and from 3 the full fare applies. How a free child is listed against the band on a private charter is confirmed in your written quote before you pay a deposit.
